Things You'll Need:
- Suit
- Dress
- Simple jewelry
- Button-down shirt
- Formal shoes
- Conservative heels
-
Step 1
Wear a suit if you own one. A suit is always appropriate when paired with formal shoes for a traditional Jewish event. Adding cuff links and a tie will let you express your personality while still looking proper.
-
Step 2
Put on a suit jacket and coordinating pants if you do not own a suit. A tie is appropriate but may not be necessary.
-
Step 3
Wear a kippah if possible. Some hosts will provide you with one if you do not have one. You may be able to wear a small hat, but not a ball cap, in place of a kippah.
-
Step 1
Wear a dress for a bris. Make sure your hem is at least to the middle of your kneecap and your shoulders and cleavage are fully covered.
-
Step 2
Wear formal pants and a coordinating jacket if you are more comfortable in slacks. Be sure to wear a conservative shirt underneath. Add a nice piece of jewelry to add a little spice to your look.
-
Step 3
Choose lower, more conservative heels to wear with your outfit. You will likely be holding the baby at some point and won't want to teeter over with him in your arms.
-
Step 1
Follow the same rules for a man or woman when dressing a child for a bris.
-
Step 2
Visit the Temple Beth Sholom Web site for more ideas on what is appropriate for kids (see Resources below).

on 3/26/2008 check out this article for a HUGE list of modest clothing retailers. It can be frustrating to find modest, stylish outfits. These retailers do a great job of meeting that need. http://www.ehow.com/how_2245509_fashionable-modest-clothing.html
