The best homecoming activities are those that involve as many students as possible. This is a week when people can really mingle and get to know each other in a spirit of festive energy. The right activities can make all the difference, and can reflect positively on your leadership skills.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • List of activities
  • Old yearbooks
  • Committee

Stick to the Classics

Step1
Know that you don't have to start from scratch when planning homecoming activities; there are plenty of time-tested themed activities to build spirit during homecoming week. Web sites like Party411 are a great place to pick up general ideas to help you plan homecoming activities (see Resources below).
Step2
Ask parents and teachers what their favorite homecoming activities were. You may find some overlooked classic themes, or great ideas to use for a vintage-themed homecoming.
Step3
Know that there are plenty of after-school activities to choose from for this week as well. One favorite is having each class level (Frosh, Soph, Juniors and Seniors) decorate a hall in the school according to a pre-approved theme, and then having the halls judged for creativity by school administration.

Strech Your Imagination With Homecoming Activities

Step1
Use your imagination to bring extra spirit to the school during homecoming week. Ask the drama department to write and present a play, have a karaoke sing-off or put up a giant cardboard wall and supply students with finger paints.
Step2
Look in old year books to see what kind of homecoming activity have already been used. You can then adapt these ideas to build your own unique set of events.
Step3
Consider combining homecoming with a charity fundraiser. For example, some schools have mock weddings for a few dollars a couple, with proceeds to be donated to charity. Other schools opt to have a playful stag auction or even a bake sale during the dance.

Encourage Team Participation in Planning Activities

Step1
Ask someone you don't know well to join the planning committee, such as a freshman or someone in an entirely different social circle than yours. Adding new committee members may help you come up with fresh ideas.
Step2
Hold meetings at least several times a week. Not only will this help the planning process go smoother, but it will also give busy committee members a chance to participate in at least meeting a week.
Step3
Take a vote on ideas that are on the table. What you think may not work may be just what the others are enthusiastic about. Then, plan to your heart's content, using decorations, contests and prizes to make the day memorable.

Tips & Warnings

  • Plan activities that are fun, simple and affordable, so that everyone can participate. For example, "School Colors Day" or "Inside Out Day" may be more inclusive than "Bling Bling Day."
