Choose a Dramatic Theme
Step1
Go with a popular theme that will inspire terrific costumes, such as pirates, popular films or sci-fi. The more extensive the theme, the more leeway students will have in creating their own costumes. For instance, the a fairytale theme could allow students to come as royalty, fairies, witches or even goblins.
Step2
Brainstorm. Some of the best themes come about only when two or more people sit down with colored pencils and a large sheet of paper and just write down anything that comes to mind, without pre-judging it for appropriateness.
Step3
Think about what most similar occasions are like, and then choose the opposite. If a similar dance would be formal, consider a tropical island theme, complete with photos on "sandy dunes" in front of potted palms. Or, go ultra-formal, with a "Casino Royale"-type theme.
Step4
Hold a school-wide contest to select a homecoming theme to build even more excitement amongst the student body.
Step5
Emphasize that appropriate attire is expected. This makes it more fun for everybody and reduces any confusion or embarrassment which may arise from being improperly dressed.
Create the Mood
Step1
Shop at local charity shops, thrift stores and party supply stores for inexpensive decorations. Also, canvass neighbors before the event to borrow props.
Step2
Select the right time of day to bolster the ambiance of the homecoming event. If the theme is "rodeo," you'll want to begin festivities early, perhaps with a cattle-calling contest. A "Hawaiian Nights" theme will work best on a warm, starry night, which can be created using outdoor heaters.
Step3
Borrow two or three classic cars from parents, alumni or even a local museum, and roll them into the event hall. If the cars are from the 1920s, consider a "Flapper Night," with fruit punch served in plastic champagne glasses. If the cars are Volkswagon Beetles, think about a "Flower Child" theme, complete with cheap, rose-colored plastic sunglasses handed out at the door.
