Spinning, which is an exercise regimen involving the use of a stationary bicycle in a classroom setting, has become a very popular way to burn fat and increase cardiovascular health. Choosing the appropriate attire for Spinning is essential to your performance level as well as your enjoyment.

Dress for Spinning

Step1
Select your footwear based on the type of pedals on the stationary bike you'll be using. If the pedals have a simple strap, then you should use a high-quality cross-training shoe with mesh or breathable uppers and stiff soles. If the pedals have toe clips, then you'll have to purchase a bicycling cleat that is designed to snap onto the pedals. Ask your instructor about SPD (Shimano Pedal Design) cleats and pedals, as they offer the maximum performance in Spinning footwear.
Step2
Choose bicycling shorts that have a chamois crotch for maximum comfort while Spinning. Opt for padded shorts, or even a padded seat, if you experience a lot of discomfort while Spinning. Shorts should be tight and form fitting to help reduce chafing and shifting unnecessarily on the bicycle seat.
Step3
Dress in a shirt or top that will help to absorb excess perspiration and keep your body cool and dry. Be careful, however, not to wear clothing that is too thick, such as sweatshirts, since the Spinning rooms are usually already hot and humid and you don't want to overheat.
Step4
Consider wearing a pair of bicycling gloves to protect your hands. This will help to prevent calluses from the handlebars and also help eliminate blood circulation problems that may occur at the tips of your fingers.
Step5
Ask your Spinning instructor or consult such online resources for more tips on how to dress for Spinning (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

  • Visit your doctor before starting any exercise regimen that places stress on your cardiovascular system. Physicians don't generally recommended Spinning for patients who experience back, heart problems, or joint problems like arthritis.
  • Always keep plenty of water available during class, since the Spinning rooms are purposely hot and humid. Most certified Spinning instructors will require you to drink at least one ounce of water for every minute you spend on the bike.
