Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the type of kickboxing you want to compete in, since the rules and regulations are different for each discipline. There are dozens of styles of kickboxing, including Muay Thai, American kickboxing, Japanese kickboxing, European kickboxing and full contact karate. Check out the International Sport Kickboxing Association Web site or Kickboxing.com for further descriptions (see Resources below).

    • 2

Join a martial arts facility or "dojo" that specializes in offering instruction for the specific type of kickboxing you want to pursue. While some kickboxing competitions are open to all entrants, a large majority of competitions require an affiliation with a dojo or other training facility. Many dojos may also sponsor smaller competitions themselves, which can help you gain more experience before entering larger tournaments.

    • 3

Choose a particular kickboxing competition you want to enter, and set aside a specific amount of time with your trainers and instructors to properly prepare for the tournament. Be sure to discuss your goals with your instructors, so that they can tailor a training program for your needs.

    • 4

Be aware of any entry fees or qualifications you have to satisfy before entering the competition. There may be restrictions based upon age, experience, weight classes or other factors.

    • 5

Eat properly in the days leading up to the competition. Most professional kickboxers stress the importance of a proper diet while training, including lots of protein, carbohydrates, and low-fat foods.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always wear protective padding and a helmet when you participate in a kickboxing tournament, especially if you are under the age of 18.

  • Employ cross-training methods that strengthen the lower body, such as jumping rope (a kickboxing favorite) or jogging. This will help you to achieve stamina, balance and agility during a tournament.

  • Check with a doctor before you participate in any type of martial arts competition.

  • Be aware of the risk of injury at a kickboxing tournament, even if you wear protective equipment.
