The prevention of restless leg syndrome (RLS) is more an effort to eliminate or control other conditions which manifest symptoms of RLS. Since the cause of RLS is unknown, it is impossible to identify measures to prevent the disorder. Research is ongoing to determine the cause and subsequent prevention of RLS.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Step1
Understand that one condition which can manifest the same symptoms as RLS is pregnancy. Symptoms usually disappear shortly after delivery.
Step2
Realize obesity is sometimes associated with RLS symptoms. Weight loss and proper diet may cause symptoms to disappear.
Step3
Stop smoking if you experience RLS symptoms.
Step4
Increase iron intake through proper diet. Iron deficiency and anemia can manifest symptoms similar to RLS.
Step5
Keep diseases such as diabetes and kidney failure under control to avoid vitamin and mineral deficiencies. These conditions can exacerbate restless RLS.
Step6
Understand that certain medications can cause RLS symptoms. H2-histamine blockers (such as Zantac and Tagamet) and some depressants (Elavil for example) are known to manifest RLS symptoms. Let your doctor know if you are taking these or any medication that lists RLS symptoms as a possible side effect.
Step7
Reduce the level of stress to possibly decrease the symptoms of RLS. Many RLS sufferers find stress relief helpful in managing this disorder.
Step8
Prevent or reduce RLS symptoms by reducing the intake of caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. These substances have been shown to adversely affect the ability for the muscles to relax efficiently.
Step9
Keep up on the research regarding causes and prevention of RLS. Studies are underway searching for answers to this mysterious disorder that affects millions of people of all ages.

Tips & Warnings

  • There is no cure, so proper management is the only option at the present to prevent symptoms of RLS from escalating. Accepting the fact that managing the symptoms of RLS is a lifelong process is a major step to living a quality lifestyle.
  • While medications such as clonazepam, temazepam and others are effective in improving sleep quality, be aware of possible side effects. Many medications used to prevent RLS symptoms can cause drowsiness during the daytime. Exercise caution in driving or any activity where alertness is paramount to safety.
