Football is a game of skill, speed and stamina. As such, it takes a lot of practice to get it right. It is not enough to just keep playing the game. You need to run drills of specific moves and techniques in order to make them second nature. Every major team has their own way of running football drills, whether in the National Football League or just a high school varsity squad. No matter what, run football drills with heart and you will see a difference in your abilities. Read on to learn how to run football drills.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Coach
  • Football
  • Players
  • Football Drill Equipment
  • Football Field
Step1
Choose specific drills to run on specific days. For example, one day you might want to focus just on running plays, while the next day you just work on defensive blitzes. This maximizes the time you get to spend on one area of play instead of spreading your focus and limiting the impact.
Step2
Set up the equipment you need to train. If you are training your blockers, then you are going to need the faux-defensive line, a metal structure that has padded dummies placed at even intervals. This is both a strength training as well as coordination-building exercise.
Step3
Have your kickers constantly trying to get the football through the goal posts, or run drills in which they target specific points on the field for kickoffs or punts.
Step4
Set up running drills in which players must move as quickly as possible through a row of tires, ropes or other obstacles.
Step5
Train your receivers and running backs to jink and maneuver as much as possible. Place obstacles along a straight line and have then run to and then roll off of the "defenders."
Step6
Play scrimmage games in which the offensive line and the defensive line try out specific drills on one another to test the effectiveness of the plays you plan on using in the next game.

Tips & Warnings

  • Drink lots of fluids when you run football drills. You are going to be burning a lot of calories and energy and you need to stay hydrated.
  • Be sure to stretch before you begin to run football drills. They are often tiring and strenuous, and if you haven't stretched adequately prior to training, you run the risk of injury.
  • Wear pads even when running drills. While not nearly as dangerous as playing the game, football drills still involve contact and plenty of athleticism, so play it safe and keep your pads on.
