A common infield misconception is that the second baseman always stands on second base. Young players think that that their job is to stay glued to the bag. In fact, a second baseman's job is to effectively cover second when a man is on the base and be the cut-off man for right field when a ball is thrown to second or first. Read on to learn how to play second base.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Know Your Role for All Plays

  1. Step 1

Play shallow when there are no runners on base. The second base position does not require a player with a power arm. The most important skill of a second baseman is agility.

  2. Step 2

Get in front of the ball quickly. You will need to hurry, especially on the routine grounders to effectively make the out.

  3. Step 3

Anticipate the bunt. As the second baseman, you are responsible to go for the bunt and make the throw to first base to beat the runner.

  4. Step 4

Stay aware of what the first baseman needs. Run to first base and provide back up. An inaccurately fielded ball will cause the first baseman to stretch off the bag to catch the throw.

  5. Improve Your Second Baseman's Skills

  6. Step 1

Teach him to be quick on his feet. He won't need the supreme arm speed that other players must have, but he will need to make quick decisions.

  7. Step 2

Show your second baseman where he is supposed to go during the cover. Depending on the runner and the direction of the ball, this may be to the left or the right of the base.

  8. Step 3

Ensure the second baseman has a solid glove. If he doesn't, consider a different player for the position. Teach skills to improve quick reactions, such as man-on-base exercises and catching drills.

  9. Step 4

Emphasize the importance of communication. It is vital that the second baseman and the shortstop communicate effectively to avoid collisions and errors.

  10. Teach Double Play Skills

  11. Step 1

Watch for the chance to turn a double play. When the ball is hit in the baseman's direction, stress accuracy rather than speed. A double play can rescue the pitcher if a throw is used to pick off the lead runner.

  12. Step 2

Scoop up the ball and throw it to the infielder closest to the lead runner.

  13. Step 3

Concentrate on the throw. If your players can also do this quickly, they will help the team reach the two-out goal of the double play.

Tips & Warnings
  • Thoroughly teach your baseman his responsibilities and make certain he knows how to play his assigned position.
