Things You'll Need:

  • Basic Knowledge of Yoga
  1. Step 1

Select a destination for your retreat. Yoga retreats can be found in exotic locales like Bali or just a few minutes outside your hometown. If your vacation time is limited, you may want to choose a retreat in a destination you have been wanting to visit.

  2. Step 2

Look for a retreat that caters to the type of yoga you practice. While some places may offer different styles of yoga, most focus on only one or two. Sometimes the type of yoga dictates when you can visit a retreat. Check the dates against your schedule to see if you can attend a special workshop or session on the style of yoga you prefer.

  3. Step 3

Make arrangements to attend the retreat. Since most retreats are private, with limited space, you will need to register in advance.

  4. Step 4

Decide how long you want to stay. While a weekend getaway provides an excellent chance to focus on yoga, you may want to spend more time at the retreat. Depending on your reasons for attending the retreat, you may need more time to relax and get into the routine.

  5. Step 5

Select activities to participate in during your retreat. Most centers offer other activities, beyond yoga, including hiking, sightseeing and crafts. You do not need to participate in every activity offered, but you should at least try a few.

  6. Step 6

Relax. Whether you are attending a yoga retreat for spiritual growth or just to get away from it all, you must relax in order for the retreat to be worthwhile. Forget about the hustle and bustle you left behind and focus on your yoga.

  7. Step 7

Talk to the other people at the retreat--unless you have chosen a silent retreat--to make friends with people from all over the world. People participate in yoga retreats for various reasons, and you will certainly meet several interesting people with various levels of yoga experience.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many resorts offer daily yoga, so you can work your practice into any vacation, even if you decide not to commit to a retreat.
  • Yoga retreats usually serve a vegetarian diet, but they will also accommodate vegan, kosher and other restricted diets. Make sure you notify the retreat in advance of any special requirements.
