Once a luxury only celebrities and the very rich could afford, in-home personal trainers are now going mainstream. Many gyms and fitness companies around the country are now offering their clients the opportunity to have a trainer come to their home for scheduled workouts. The convenience of not having to go to a gym is appealing to many, as is the fact that having a trainer come to your home eliminates any excuses you could have for not working out. Take advantage of this trend by learning how to work with a trainer at home. Follow these steps to learn more.

Get Fit at Home With a Personal Trainer

Step1
Decide if gender matters to you. If you are a woman who will be at home alone when the trainer arrives, you may be more comfortable with a female trainer.
Step2
Ask for references when signing up with a home training company. You want to be sure the company you are considering inviting into your home is reputable and trustworthy. If they can't provide references, ask to see any written testimonials other clients may have written.
Step3
Get to know your trainer before the first home session. Meet at company headquarters or in some other public place so you can have a get-acquainted conversation. This is important in order to determine if you and your potential trainer are a good match personality-wise. It will do you no good, after all, to work with someone who rubs you the wrong way.
Step4
Let your home trainer know about your fitness history. You will do this once you have picked someone to work with. Tell your trainer about your exercise likes and dislikes, prior workout experience and any injuries or other physical issues you may have that would impact they type of exercise you can do. Your trainer will use this information when she creates your custom workout routine.
Step5
Be there for your appointments. Your trainer will come to your home to work with you on a pre-determined schedule. This may be once a week or every day, depending on the program you signed up for. If you need to cancel or re-schedule an appointment, give your trainer as much notice as possible so he doesn't waste his time driving out to your house only to find you are not there.

Tips & Warnings

  • The National Home Trainers website (see Resources below) has information on obtaining your own home trainer through their company. Through them, you can arrange for a home trainer no matter where you live in the United States.
