Things You'll Need:
- Documentation of any previous training or fitness certification
- General resume
-
Step 1
Get your foot in the fitness industry, if you haven't already. Participate in different classes to become familiar with different levels of fitness instruction before you endeavor to become a certified water aerobics instructor.
-
Step 2
Talk to your instructors and fitness directors of the facilities in which you participate with or have membership to. These contacts will have the experience to best advise you on how to proceed to become a certified water aerobics instructor.
-
Step 3
Understand that you may need additional certifications after you become a certified water aerobics instructor. For instance, if you intend to engage or even specialize in water aerobics instruction as part of a rehabilitation program, or offer personal training services, then you may be required to become certified in those areas as well.
-
Step 4
Be aware that there may be a combination of training requirements involved in becoming a certified water aerobics instructor. While onsite instruction at a qualified certification facility is standard protocol, you may also be required to undergo written exams.
-
Step 5
Expect your water aerobics instruction certification training to consist of theory as well as practical application.
-
Step 6
Know that your certification as a water aerobics instructor must be renewed every two years.
-
Step 7
Explore water aerobics instruction certification courses and procedures online from WaterArt Fitness International (see Resources below).

on 8/4/2009 Anyone interested in becoming a water aerobics instructor should check out AEA (Aquatic Exercise Association). They are the best at water instruction b/c that's all they do! I have been teaching aqua classes since 1992 and certified with them since 1998 and what a difference it has made! Every 2 years I need to submit 15 continuing ed'n credits to renew my cert. so I always have new ideas and don't get stale like the instructors at my gym without a cert. My classes are big and my knowledge and understanding of how and what to teach is due to my AEA training. You'll need 8-10 weeks to study for the test and they have study guides, etc. Their website is www.aeawave.com Getting certified with AEA is the best fitness decision I've ever made!

on 8/4/2008 First of all, depending upon where you live, try the Red Cross or YMCA for information on instructor certifications. As for evening classes, once you are ready I think you could talk to the pool manager and ask if they would mind if you approached other members to see if they would be interested in a class. Once you get three or four people on a scheduled night(s) you will hae established a 'class'. The important thing is to be dependable, especially at the beginning, because you will rapidly lose your following if you miss too much. You may have to teach for extended membership insread of a salary in the beginning.

on 6/24/2008 I am interested in becoming an Aqua Fitness Instructor. Due to a recent back injury, I have found that for a professional person like myself, there are no classes in the evening where I live. Most gyms cater to retired/elderly and offer day classes, but not evening classes. I often have to exercise alone and I would like to change that. I have no experience in this area at all. How should I start?
