Things You'll Need:
- Entrance fee
- Trail running equipment
- Race trail map
-
Step 1
Look at a calendar of trail running races near you for the year. You will be able to know when the next race is going to be held as well as how long it is before you decide to participate. Trail Runner magazine (see below) also has a listing of the entrance fees.
-
Step 2
Show up early for the race so you can sign in, stretch and mentally prepare. When you are in a rush you can break your concentration and stress yourself out, which affects your performance.
-
Step 3
Get all of your gear in order at least 20 minutes before the race. Some races insist on inspecting your equipment to insure it is permitted by the guidelines of the race.
-
Step 4
Participate in charity races. There are charity races held year round across the country; so finding one should be simple. Each charity race invites sponsors to help pay for the race itself, as well as ask for donations to the cause in question.
-
Step 5
Play fair! Don't bump or jostle other competitors. This isn't just rude and unsporting, it can also be very dangerous.
-
Step 6
Head to a community sponsored race. These are among the most fun as the goal is usually to get back to the trail head first since food and drink is often provided! Some races have a special place set for the winner at the "head of the table."
-
Step 7
Race as part of a trail running club. Many trail running clubs exists from state to state, and members are invited to travel from trail to trail in order to represent the sport and one another.
