Select the Right Type of Cardio Exercise for You

  1. Step 1

Set realistic goals. Goal setting should be the first part of any cardio workout plan. Ask yourself what it is you want to accomplish. Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to maintain weight? Do you want to increase endurance or train for a competition?

  2. Step 2

Select the type of cardio exercise you do depending on what goals you're trying to reach.

  3. Step 3

Select swimming laps as part of a beginner's cardio exercise program. Lap swimming is right for those just starting out because it is a great cardio workout and is also very low impact. If you're just starting out and not in great shape yet, swimming will help you burn calories, improve muscle strength and avoid injuries.

  4. Step 4

Select water aerobics if you're pregnant. Water aerobics are right for women trying to stay fit while pregnant because it burns calories without jarring the baby inside you.

  5. Step 5

Combine cardio exercises if you're already in good shape and are trying to take it to the next level. Alternate between running and biking for endurance and stamina. Add rowing in for a total body cardio workout.

  6. Step 6

Alternate between cardio exercises to avoid boredom. A major factor for failed workout plans is boredom. Changing up what you do regularly will keep you interested and will also work different muscles.

  7. Step 7

Select the type of cardio exercise that will help you train for your event. Cross training is healthy, but if you're running a marathon it makes sense to practice by running. If you're training for a triathalon, you'll want to alternate between swimming, biking and running.

  8. Step 8

Find something you enjoy. The right type of cardio exercise for you is one that you won't be looking for excuses to avoid.
