Aerobics has become a competitive sport with quality athletes vying to become the best in their field. It's also a fun sport to watch and enjoy. Follow these steps to compete or spectate.

Start out at a local aerobics competition. This will build your experience for the more advanced competitions. Some of the local competitions are called fitness challenges.

Instruct aerobics for several months to a year before you enter a competition. You should be well-versed in all the current dance moves, styles and standards in the field of aerobics.

Qualify for the competition. Contact the organization who promotes the competition you want to enter. There will be specific rules for entry into the competition. Some are divided by age and level of difficulty, such as "World Junior Aerobic Showcase" for 8 to 11 year-old dancers.

Find the biggest aerobics competitions in your country or area. Visit the Association of National Aerobics Championships Web site to learn more about this top aerobics event (see Resources below).

Know the length and details of the competition's routine. You will be given a certain amount of time to perform your event. Some competitions have varying categories such as individual, double, trio or group.

Explore the rules for competing in the event. You will be required to perform specific elements of a routine, such as kicks. Judges will evaluate certain routines by its level of difficulty. Be sure and know what elements you are not allowed to display.

Fill out an entry form. There is usually a nominal fee to enter into an aerobic competition along with a specified deadline to have the form completed. Find out what the award for the winners will be. Winning an aerobic competition can include trophies, medals and cash prizes.

Tips & Warnings
Become a certified aerobics instructor before you enter into a competition. You can get certified through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. Requirements for this certification can range from aerobic terminology to pattern choreography and sequencing skills.
