A mascot should have several skits ready for each game. Put together one longer skit to use during halftime, but also have several very short "bits" that you can use to take advantage of timeouts and other pauses in the action.

Things You'll Need:

  • Follow spot light and operator, if possible
  • Variety of props to be pulled from the bag
  • Large tote bag
  • Assistant

Put Together a Mascot Skit to Keep Your Audience Laughing

  1. Step 1

Plant a female assistant in the audience with a very large tote bag. Be certain she is seated where she can be clearly seen. If possible, have a follow spot on you when you go into the crowd.

  2. Step 2

"Steal" her purse and run with it to a spot in full view, then open it. If your assistant is willing to play an active role, have her chase you and keep trying to get the bag back.

  3. Step 3

Start removing strange items and showing them to the crowd. Use your imagination: a rubber duck, a bunch of bananas or whatever would be funny to find in a purse. Make sure each is large enough to be clearly seen.

  4. Step 4

Stop after removing 5 or 6 items. Hold the bag open and stare into it. Look at the woman in amazement. Look into the bag again and shudder or clap your hand over your mouth as if you were going to vomit.

  5. Step 5

Close the bag and very slowly return it to her, holding it with 2 fingers and far away from your body as if whatever you saw in there is something really disgusting.

  6. Step 6

Wipe your hands on a spectator sitting nearby.

Tips & Warnings
  • Put together a card file of your skit ideas and rotate them frequently so they don't get stale for your audience.
  • Be sure that all your actions are as big and broad as you can make them. Subtle gestures won't be visible under your costume.
  • Be very careful doing physical stunts and practice them ahead of time on a padded surface. No matter how easy it is for you to do a cartwheel, for example, it becomes a totally different feat when you're wearing an oversized head and a fur suit.
  • If you have any doubt at all about whether a skit is appropriate for your audience, clear it with an official ahead of time.
  • Water guns are popular for use in mascot skits, but be certain not to get any water on the playing area.
