How to Select a Theme for a First Communion Party

The first communion, a significant event in the Christian church, is cause for a celebration. Organizing the party begins when you select the theme and then build the food, decorations and activities around the central idea. Incorporating both religious significance and fun into the event makes a perfect First Communion party.

Select A Theme For A First Communion Party

1. Start with the purpose of the celebration--First Communion, an important part of the Christian faith. Select a theme connected to the significance of the rite, or to the Christian life so that the child may better understand what he has just done.
2. Read the Bible as a first resource. Consider themes such as Jesus' love for children (Matthew 19:14), children belonging to the kingdom (Luke 9:48) or children's guardian angels (Matthew 18:10b). You can search the Bible electronically at Crosswalk.com (see Resources below).
3. Take a look at the children's education materials your church provides. These books usually have themed units such as "God Made the World" and "Jesus Loves Me" that could also be used as party themes by creating a centerpiece with a large globe or heart.
4. Tie in a secular theme with a religious theme. Music, clothing and even cars (symbolizing life's journey) might also work.
5. Think about whether the party will take place during the Christmas, Easter or Pentecost church seasons. Jesus' birth and resurrection, or the coming of God's Spirit in wind and flame might relate well to your celebration.
6. Imagine how each theme you consider might play out in terms of decorations, food and activities. Don't select something that sounds good and then find that it is too limited.
