How to Pick a Divorce Party Cake

Divorce parties, like weddings, aren't complete without a cake. As divorce parties become more popular, cakes are becoming more elaborate. The groom may not be there in person, but he's usually reflected in the cake's décor, whether he's being pushed over the edge or at the foot of a knife-wielding bride.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Budget for cake

Pick a Bakery for the Cake

Step1
Decide what size cake you need depending on how many people you invited. You should start looking for a baker a few weeks before your party, so you may not have a final headcount yet. Provide a close approximation. Divorce cakes come in all shapes and sizes and are usually modeled after wedding cakes.
Step2
Call local bakeries and ask if they've created divorce cakes. If so, ask if you can see photos and a price list. Some bakeries may have photos online. If they've never made one before, ask if they could copy a design that you would provide.

Pick a Theme for the Cake

Step1
Choose a theme provided by the baker, or provide your own. The design can reflect a fun take on divorce, like the broken chain of a "ball and chain" or the bride and groom on two separate halves of cake. There are several ideas online (see Resources below). Some designs are edgier and more graphic, such as Shanna Moakler's divorce cake (see Resources below). Choose a design that you feel is appropriate for your guests.
Step2
Provide a design for the baker and find out if they will be able to accommodate your request.
Step3
Order a cake that will be ready the day before your party and confirm that it is ready for pick-up.
Step4
Pick up the cake in plenty of time for the party and store it in a cool, dry place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Order a plain wedding cake and decorate it yourself using traditional wedding decorations to create your own spin.
  • Consider cupcakes as a popular alternative to a party cake. Spell out D-I-V-O-R-C-E in single letters on top of cupcakes.
  • Be sure to take pictures of your cake before you cut into it.
  • Don't leave your cake in a warm car. Only pick up your cake when you're going straight home.
