There's no doubt you want the occasion of your child's baptism to be memorable. Part of what makes a party stand out are the small details, like decorations. There are plenty of resources to help you select suitable party supplies, but the main one is your own judgment. You know how you want the baptism party to look and feel. You want to make choices that will put your guests at ease. Some wise planning can smooth the process.

Select Baptism Party Supplies

Step1
Start early. Look at a good selection of party goods before you make your decision. You may have to order some of the supplies, or search in several places to find what you want. You don't want to miss out because you waited too long.
Step2
Pick a theme. Include the religious aspect of baptism with your own emphasis: babies and new life, the importance of friends and family or the role of the church in the child's life.
Step3
Pick a color scheme. While pink for girls and blue for boys is traditional, you needn't use those colors exclusively or even at all, especially when you like yellow or green better. If you do use pink or blue, don't make the colors too soft and blended. There are numerous shades and accents that will give the decorations variety.
Step4
Decide which items you need. You may want color-coordinated paper plates, cups, napkins and flatware but wish to skip the large centerpiece and use flowers in a vase instead. Fussy or delicate items might not work if a lot of the guests are children.
Step5
Shop supply stores both in person and on the Internet. While the Internet is convenient, the sales assistant at your local party store can provide assistance and real objects and colors to compare and can answer your questions. Write down your ideas in advance and compare them to what you find.
Step6
Try party-rental places as well. This a good idea, especially when you want to use china, cloth and glass instead of paper, plastic and cardboard. Since buying the real thing can be expensive, using a rental company may be the way to go, depending on how many items you need.
Step7
Hit specialty shops for those items you can't typically find at most party-supply stores, such as flowers, lighting or even a bounce house.

Tips & Warnings

  • Decorative accents need not be expensive. A length of cloth from a fabric store can be a table runner; household vases and garden flowers can replace florists' arrangements; your own baby supplies--like bottles, blankets and all those new clothes you got at the shower--can become table or wall decorations.
  • Watch your budget. Small expenses add up. Bring a calculator and add up your total before the cashier rings it up.
  • Don't go elaborate just because you can afford it. Often, the simpler route allows guests to feel more at ease and lets the religious significance of the party shine through.
