Create a tropical oasis for your next luau party. You can do this by using lots of bright colors and by selecting fun items as decorations. As long as you are focused on tropical, nearly anything you pick out will work as a decoration. There are many party stores that stock luau items. Decorations on the Internet are also plentiful and easy to find.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Christmas lights
  • Flowers
  • Grass skirts
  • Tropical fruit
  • Tiki torches and candles

Decorate on a Budget

Step1
Shop the low-cost and closeout stores for the best discounts. Luau-themed items are common, so there is no need to buy expensive items unless you want to. Most party stores have a whole luau aisle featuring a variety of paper cut-outs in the Hawaiian theme, including parrots, tropical fish and even cut-out articulated dancers.
Step2
Speak to the store manager if you are buying many or multiple items. The more you buy, the lower your prices may be.
Step3
Use items that do double duty. You can decorate both your guests and your tables with grass hula skirts, for example. Fruit such as pineapple and coconuts can used as serving dishes as well as give-aways and decorations.
Step4
Purchase orchid stems and remove individual orchids from the stem. You can scatter the flowers around on tops of tables or cakes or use them on the bar area for a colorful, easy way to decorate.

Decorate All of Your Space

Step1
Decorate walkways and sitting areas where your guests will be. Simple decorations such as tiki-bar signs or even surfboards can transform your backyard into the perfect luau locale.
Step2
Decorate with paper lanterns hung overhead. Pick bright colors like hot pink, yellow, and tropical green for an extra splash of fun. Add strings of lights wrapped around a patio umbrella for added sparkle.
Step3
Place lawn ornaments out to add visual interest. Think about buying life-size hula cut-outs or signs on stakes for the front yard to welcome your guests the moment they arrive.
Step4
Light tiki torches around the yard. Tiki torches cast a warm glow for subtle ambiance while adding to your decor. If you have a pool or pond, decorate it with romantic floating candles.
Step5
Focus on fun. Luau parties should be whimsical. Inflatable items are good to use if you have a large space to decorate. Position palm trees, tiki poles and flamingos throughout your space to add to the charm.

Tips & Warnings
