One of the more popular Barbie dolls was the Malibu Barbie. Just as Barbie is the "All-American Girl," the Malibu Barbie is a timeless symbol of the California mystique. Malibu Barbie can sport a swimsuit, sunglasses and a dark tan, or she can come clad in another sunny-weather outfit.

Select a Vintage Malibu Barbie or a Reproduction

Step1
Learn a little bit about the history of Malibu Barbie before you select one. The Malibu Barbie product line was part of the Sun Set dolls campaign, which included companion dolls such as Malibu Ken, Skipper and PJ, among others. Malibu Barbie was introduced in 1971 and ran for approximately a decade before being discontinued.
Step2
Know how to recognize a vintage Malibu Barbie by her accessories. The original Malibu Barbie came packaged with pink sunglasses and a fluffy yellow towel. Malibu Barbie was also dressed in a one-piece aqua bathing suit. Additionally, the original box was slender and Barbie was not posed inside.
Step3
Know how to spot a reproduction of the original Malibu Barbie when you select your doll. The reproduction is packaged in a wider box and does not have a clear cellophane window. Barbie is posed inside on a plastic stand with the yellow towel draped over her arm instead of behind her. Lastly, the reproduction comes with a new accessory--suntan lotion.
Step4
Inspect the Malibu Barbie before purchasing. Collectors should make sure that all accessories are intact and that Barbie's outfit is not frayed or stained. Additionally, check the doll's range of movement and ability to hold poses. Flaws in the doll's condition can lower its worth and resale value.
Step5
Consider saving money by purchasing the reproduction of Malibu Barbie released by Mattel, Inc. in 2002. Except for packaging, the reproduction looks identical to the vintage Malibu Barbie when displayed side by side. Vintage Malibu Barbie can sell for ten times the cost of the reproduction.

Tips & Warnings

  • Since the vintage Malibu Barbie doll is no longer in production, this doll is strictly for collectors or children who will not be playing with it.
  • A slightly updated reproduction of Malibu Barbie is available at a reduced cost and can be played with.
  • The original Malibu Barbie was the first to have a waist that twists and her eyes look straight forward instead of being downcast.
  • There are faithful reproductions of the original Malibu Barbie circulating the doll collector market. Make sure the collector discloses which version she is selling.
  • Malibu Barbie is packaged with miniature sunglasses that could be a choking hazard to small children.
