In Greece, there is nothing better than enjoying a fresh tomato and onion salad straight from the garden. Here's a simple recipe for a traditional village salad.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 2 Medium Size Tomatoes
  • 1 Medium Size Onion
  • Extra Virgin olive Oil
  • Red Wine Vinegar
  • Oregano
  • Salt
  • Pepper
Step1
First, cut the tomatoes in half. Take each half and cut thos into quarters. You should now have good sized tomatoes for the salad.
Step2
Secondly, cut the onions into quarters and then slice into small pieces.
Step3
Now, mix both the tomatoes and onions in a bowl. Pour about 2 tablespoons of vinegar into a cup and then pour in about 4 to 6 tablespoons of oil. Stir until they start to mix. Pour over the salad.
Step4
Now, this is where people can add or change some things. I like to add a little bit of salt, pepper, and oregano. Some people like to put crumbled feta on top. It's up to your taste buds to decide what you want to add. This salad, if done right, is a meal in itself. Serve it with a nice crusty bread and you have a wonderful light lunch or even a snack.

Tips & Warnings

  • This salad dressing and bread is to be used together. Use the bread to dunk into the salad to absorb the oil and vinegar.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment with spices and ingredients. Remember, it is only a salad and you really can't mess it up.
  • Some people use lemons instead of vinegar to flavor the salad.
  • Too much vinegar and you will make it too sour. After you pour in the vinegar, taste the dressing immediately and add more oil or even water to compensate.
