How to Improve Your Relationship with a Teen

The idea that teenagers are impossible to live with, talk to and relate to has become so commonplace that we adults start to believe and act as if it's so. The myth of the difficult teenage years is perpetuated over and over until everyone assumes that teenagers are difficult all the time. If you are stuck in that belief here are some steps to take to get your relationship with a teen moving in a positive direction.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • A sense of humor
  • The desire to try a new approach
  • An open heart

Step1
Say to your teenager, "I want to have a good relationship with you." They don't know this unless your tell them.
Step2
Say to your teenager, "I'm on your side."
Step3
Ask your teenager, "What is one thing you would like me to do that would improve our relationship?"
Step4
Ask your teenager, "Will you be patient with me, I'm learning too?
Step5
Make a sincere effort to do what they ask.
Step6
Tell your teenager, "Thank you for working on our relationship."
