Having a garage sale can be a fun and a great way to get rid of clutter and make some extra money. The key to a successful garage sale is to prepare ahead of time and be organized. Following are some steps to help you get organized for you next garage sale. Have fun making money!

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Garage sale sign
  • Garage sale permit
  • Stickers
  • Loose change and cash
  • Plastic bags
  • Long table
  • Hangers
  • Table cloth
  • Cleaning cloth

Step1
Set a date and time that you want to have your garage sale.
Step2
Obtain a garage sale permit from the city.
Step3
Advertise your garage sale in the local paper, websites, by word of mouth to friends and neighbors or by signs that need to be put up.
Step4
Purchase some colored labels to price the items that you will be selling.
Step5
Get some small change and cash ready.
Step6
Have some plastic bags ready for customers to put their purchases in.
Step7
Do a spring cleaning in your home. Go through each room in the house, and sort out what you have not used for a while or anything that you wish to be rid of and set them aside in one corner.
Step8
Organize your inventory by categories. Label the price you want on each item. If you have items that are difficult to price, bundle them together with like items, put them all in one bag and put a price for the whole bag.
Step9
Organize clothing by gender and sizes. Hang up neatly. Avoid putting them in one pile as it looks messy, and customers will not always want to forage for the right sizes. Clothes also sell at a better price if they are nicely pressed. Shoes should be arranged neatly on the floor.
Step10
Wipe down any appliances, kitchen gadgets and other items to look shiny and clean.
Step11
Place fragile items on top of a table cloth to prevent them from falling and breaking by accident.
Step12
Price reasonably. One good way to gauge is to see if you would be willing to pay that price for the item yourself.
Step13
Have another person to help you out during the day of the garage sale. Don’t try to run it alone. It will go smoother, and you will have less confusion if you have help.
Step14
Move your vehicles away so customers will have a place to park.
Step15
Smile and be friendly. Be willing to haggle.
Step16
Bag or box everything that you do not sell, and take them to your local charitable organization as soon as possible. You will be able to get a tax deduction, and you clear the clutter from your home too.
Step17
Remove the signs you posted.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you price to sell, you can avoid the hassle of haggling over the price with customers. Of course, that is half the fun of having a garage sale.
  • Put items on a long table where they can be seen better.
  • Set up all garage sale items the night before and wake up at least an hour early the next morning to bring them outside.
