Virginia's state park campgrounds are plentiful. They display a vast array of habitats and geography. Virginia's state parks range from the heart of Appalachia over the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Shenandoah Valley down to the Chesapeake Bay. Virginia calls itself the State for Lovers and nature lovers are no exception. The natural beauty of Virginia's state park campgrounds may spark more than a campfire. Follow these steps to find Virginia's top state parks.

  1. Step 1

    Discover the deepest canyon east of the Mississippi River at Breaks Interstate Park in southwestern Virginia. Called the Grand Canyon of the East, Breaks Interstate Park is one of only two interstate parks in America. The great frontiersman Daniel Boone passed through the area on several occasions. This state park has 4,500 acres of woodlands and an incredible diversity of species.

  2. Step 2

    Enjoy the highlands of the Blue Ridge Mountains at Grayson Highlands State Park. Near Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain, the tallest in Virginia, this state park offers some spectacular mountain views and great campsites and trails, as well as a variety of other outdoor activities.

    Relax and take it easy at one of Americ's best state parks: Douthat. Located between Bath and Alleghany counties, Douthat State Park is on the National Register of Historic Places. This state park in the Allegheny Mountains has all the amenities you could want, from developed campgrounds to a rocking chair on the front porch of every cabin. This fabulous state park has two lodges, one at the bottom of the mountain and one at the top.

    Explore the First Landing State Park and you will find yourself walking in the same spot where the original founders of Virginia first landed before going on to settle Jamestown. This scenic park is just five miles from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.
