It is important to clean out your medicine cabinets at least once a year. Not only does it help organize things, but it is important to go through any excess and unnecessary medications that should not be lying around or are outdated. The following will help you spring-clean your medicine cabinet.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Remove all contents from the cabinet.
Step2
Throw away any extra medications that you or others in your family no longer take or need.
Step3
Throw away empty containers.
Step4
Read the expiration dates and discard if necessary (even suntan lotion expires so check it all).
Step5
Combine duplicate items. There is no need to waste space on 4 bottles of aspirin.
Step6
Throw away improperly-stored items.
Step7
Categorize all the items that are remaining.
Step8
Wipe the inside of the medicine cabinets with warm soapy water.
Step9
Dry thoroughly.
Step10
Restock the cabinet by categories.
Step11
Keep 10 percent of the cabinet empty for future items.
Step12
Restock any of the necessities.
Step13
Verify that the cabinet closes properly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Line shelves to help in future cleanings.
  • Not drying the cabinet thoroughly before placing items back into the shelves may cause the items (those in paper) to stick.
  • Do not dump medications down the toilet. Also, do not throw away full bottles of any pill. Empty the bottles then destroy bottles and pills separately.
  • Keep children away when you complete this project.
