Registering to vote in Idaho is easy. Voter registration is permanent as long as you vote at least once every four years in a primary or general election--and as long as you do not move. You will have to re-register to vote if you move to a new residence or have a name change. Idaho also allows residents to register to vote at the polls on Election Day if you can verify residence and bring proper identification. You can register to vote in Idaho by following these simple steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Voter registration application
  • Acceptable form of identification
  • Physical mailing address
  1. Step 1

Meet the criteria to register. You must be 18 years old or older. You must also be a U.S. citizen, a resident of Idaho and a resident of that county for at least 30 days prior to election, not a convicted felon serving time or on parole and not currently judged mentally incompetent by a court of law.

  2. Step 2

    Access the online application.

  3. Step 3

Complete the online form then print it out to send in. Or you can print the form first, and then fill it out. Be sure to use blue or black ink, printing clearly.

  4. Step 4

Provide a valid Idaho driver’s license number or the last four digits of your Social Security number. If you do not have either forms of identification, check the appropriate box stating you have not been issued either one.

  5. Step 5

Sign the form. The application to register to vote is not complete without a valid signature.

  6. Step 6

Mail the completed, signed form using a first class stamp to your County Clerk or the Secretary of State. You can find the address online at the website given below or on the backside of the voter registration application.

  7. Step 7

Register at least 25 days prior to the election in which you want to vote.

  8. Step 8

Receive a receipt from the county verifying your address, stating what precinct you are in and explaining where you go to cast your vote.

  9. Step 9

Call your county clerk if you have any questions.

Tips & Warnings
  • First-time voters in Idaho must provide a copy of a current photo ID or a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or government document that shows your name and address. This documentation must be submitted with the application or shown at the polls before voting.
  • Providing false information on the application is perjury. If convicted, the penalty can be as much as $5,000, imprisonment for 1 to 14 years, or both.
