Making inexpensive jewelry boxes is an easy and fun way for girls to personalize an item for their room. Having children make inexpensive jewelry boxes is a great project for rainy or snowy days. They also make touching presents for children to give mothers, sisters and grandmothers. It is easy to make inexpensive jewelry boxes with a few materials found at any craft store and most discount stores. Follow these steps to find out how.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Small boxes
  • Paint
  • Colored paper
  • Glitter
  • Small mirrors
  • Stickers
  • Small charms (such as scrapbook decorations)
  1. Step 1

Visit a hobby store to purchase small wooden or cardboard boxes and the other materials (paint, glue or paper) necessary. Purchase small mirrors that will fit inside the lid of the box and visit the scrapbook section to find small decorative items for the box.

  2. Step 2

Painting or gluing colored paper on the outside of the jewelry boxes may need to be done in advance to allow time form drying. Likewise, flocking or gluing felt linings to the interior should also be done in advance.

  3. Step 3

Apply stickers and glue glitter on boxes with younger children. Older kids can make inexpensive jewelry boxes by painting a design or gluing decorative elements to the exterior.

  4. Step 4

Glue mirrors to the lid of each box. It may be necessary to turn the boxes upside down while the glue dries to prevent the mirror from falling. The mirror is the finishing touch most children love as they consider this the feature that makes it a “real” jewelry box.

  5. Step 5

Have each child sign and date the bottom of their box when completed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Heavier items, such as the mirror, may need to be adhered with hot clue.
  • Be careful with hot melt glue and paint.
