So you're having a baby. Maybe this is your first child and you want to have a natural childbirth. Maybe it's your second and a planned cesarean section is ideal. Regardless of the type of birth you want, for it to be successful you must plan ahead. Be safe, and be prepared for the unexpected.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Talk with your doctor and research online and through books to learn all that you can about your different options for childbirth.
Step2
Tell your doctor exactly what you have in mind so that he or she understands your priorities in addition to anything you're uncomfortable with.
Step3
Create a short birth plan, noting any specific preferences you have.
Step4
Determine if you are willing to have an epidural or not, and communicate this to your physician.
Step5
Take a class that teaches breathing exercises and relaxation; both are excellent tools for making labor and delivery less stressful.
Step6
Prepare yourself for unexpected turns during your delivery. It may not always go accordingly to your plan. Keeping yourself open to this possibility will make the event go more smoothly.
Step7
Ask questions. Before and during labor and delivery, ask your doctors and nurses anything that comes to mind. Knowledge is everything, and the more you understand what is happening, the more comfortable you'll be.
Step8
Surround yourself with loved ones. Those who know you best will be the ultimate comfort.
