Utility Assistance is available for low-income families who meet the required guidelines. There is a government program called LIHEAP, which assists low-income families and individuals with their heating and electric bills. Senior citizens and those who receive disability can sign up for utility assistance during the months of September and October. Everybody else can sign up from November through May. Local agencies and areas within the community have certified officials who can help with the application process.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Telephone
  • Pencil
  • Notebook
  • Proof of past 30 days income
  • Social security cards for everybody in the household
  • Copy of your most recent heating and electric bill
  • Telephone book
  1. Step 1

Research your local telephone book. Turn to the government listings section in your telephone book to find public agencies. If you cannot find listings for any public agencies, contact your local chamber of commerce for more information.

  2. Step 2

Contact the listings that you find in your telephone book and ask the agencies about the LIHEAP program and how you can apply. If it is during the application season, go ahead and make an appointment.

  3. Step 3

Attend your LIHEAP appointment. Bring in proof of your past 30 days income, social security cards for everybody in the household, and your most recent heating and electric bill.

  4. Step 4

Ask any questions that you may have concerning the LIHEAP program. Ask for brochures or any informational handouts that may be available to you.

  5. Step 5

Wait patiently for your application to process. It takes a minimum of 30-45 days for the application to be completed. You will receive a notice in the mail if you are eligible. If you meet the income guidelines, a benefit amount will be credited towards your utility accounts.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be on time for your appointment. Agencies stay very busy during the LIHEAP season. If you are late or you miss your appointment, it could be difficult to make another one.
  • Bring all of the correct requested documentation. Without it, your LIHEAP application could be denied.
  • Sign up early for the LIHEAP program. The longer you wait, the more of a chance you have not being accepted for the utility benefit amount. The government only gives agencies so much money. Once the money has been used, families and individuals will have to wait until next season to apply for LIHEAP benefits.
  • Keep paying on your utility bills after you sign up for LIHEAP. Simply signing up does not mean you are automatically accepted. Pay on your account until you see a credit that appears on your billing statement.
