How to Decorate a Child's Room

Decorating a child’s room is usually easier than decorating any other room in the house. It is more fun, too. In this room, more than any other, the personality of the occupant is given a chance to shine. Whether you’re a design novice or a seasoned pro, decorating a child’s room is a short-term investment that can create long-term memories.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Paint
  • Stencils
  • Bookshelf
  • Wall treatments
  • Bed
  • Storage
  • Draperies

Step1
Experiment with color. Bold colors and patterns that might appear garish in other rooms can make a child’s room fun and welcoming. Paint the whole room red or use stencils to apply large geometric shapes on the walls.
Step2
Consider murals for children with strong interests. A child’s love of horses might be highlighted by a sophisticated riding scene that will take her from preschool to high school.
Step3
Add multi-functional elements. A child's room can be used for sleeping, studying and playing. A bed with built in bookshelves can house his toys in the early years and textbooks later on.
Step4
Imagine the storage your child will need and double it. Parents usually underestimate the amount of toys, books and other stuff their child will accumulate over the years. If you have an extra wall or corner, use it for extra cubbies or shelves.
Step5
Overcome architectural flaws. Small rooms appear larger with a bright coat of pale yellow paint. A room with an odd shaped nook becomes fanciful when draperies and a rod turn the nook into a hideout.
Step6
Allow children to have a say in decorating. This is especially important with older children or siblings sharing a room. Ballerinas and frogs can and should inhabit the same space, if it keeps the peace!
Step7
Create a safe zone for your children. Bolt tall dressers to the wall. Put locks on windows. Check your home for lead-based paint, especially if it was built before 1978.
