Deal With Behavior Problems

At some time or another every parent has to deal with behavior problems from their children. Knowing that it's completely normal and that all parents deal with it can ease frustrations a little when you're at the end of your rope. Solutions can vary, but they mainly depend on what is causing the child to behave negatively.

Instructions

    • 1

Consider any changes that have occurred in the child's life. A new baby, a divorce or a death in the family, for example, can all trigger behavior problems. If this is the culprit, getting it out in the open can ease the child's insecurities and the behavioral problems will probably be short-lived.

    • 2

Ask the child about his life in general. Find out if there is something in particular he or she is stressed about. Mention specific examples of the behavior problems and try to identify the reasons behind them. If a specific reason is given, try to remedy the situation (for instance, not understanding something at school, a bully, etc.). If it can't be remedied (for example your child says "I just don't want to do my homework") explain why it can't be changed.

    • 3

Ensure the child is getting enough sleep and proper nutrition. Hunger and sleep deprivation are the most common culprits behind behavioral problems.

    • 4

Speak to the child's teachers and/or caregivers. Ask if they have noticed the behavior problems and if they have any ideas about the cause. Work together to come up with ideas and possible solutions.

    • 5

Talk to the child's pediatrician. She can rule out any underlying medical problems and give a referral to a qualified child or family therapist if needed.

    • 6

Consider family therapy in addition to individual therapy for the child. Therapists can help teach proactive ways to deal with the behavioral problems, and better explain exactly what the problems are.
