How to Audition for a Rock Band

Auditioning for a rock band can be pretty unnerving, especially if you show up unprepared and with the wrong attitude. 1. Get to know the rock band. Check them out on MySpace or ask the band for a demo. There is nothing worse than playing with a band that you don't even like.

2. Bring your own gear to the audition. You will feel more comfortable using your own instrument, and you will show the band that you are a serious musician.

3. Dress like you are already in a rock band. There is no need to show up in leather and spandex, but be conscious of making a first impression that says you know how to look the part of a rock star.

4. Show up with enough swagger and confidence to impress the band with your skills, but try to meld your playing with the band before you tear off into a 20-minute solo.

5. Talk with the band members and get a feel for their personalities. Any musician can play with another musician, but it takes real chemistry to set a band apart from the rest. Try to imagine yourself cooped up in a smelly van with the band for weeks on end. The whole thing is not worth getting into if you don't think you can get along with the band members offstage.
