Scarecrows have come a long way since the iconic flannel shirt and overalls draped across a frame standing in the middle of a corn field. At the end of summer, scarecrows start popping up everywhere from schools to craft stores to front porches. By hosting a scarecrow making party, you can add your own custom touch to this fun emblem of autumn. Read on to learn how to plan a scarecrow making party.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Straw or Shredded Newspaper
  • Gloves or Mittens
  • Pants or Overalls
  • Buttons
  • Old Boots
  • Twine
  • Long-Sleeved Shirt
  • Felt
  • Safety Pins
  • Hat
  • Wooden Stakes and Nails (Optional)

Step1
Determine who you want to invite to the party. If the guests are young children, you can all work together on one scarecrow. Each child can be responsible for one part or they can work in groups. If the attendees are families or adults, each invitee can make their own scarecrow.
Step2
Think about who will provide the supplies. You could supply the materials yourself, especially if you are creating simple scarecrows with kids. Let each guest bring enough of one item for everyone. Or, each guest could provide all of the materials to make her own scarecrow.
Step3
Send out invitations explaining what each guest should bring and what they will be taking home from the party. If you are providing the scarecrow making supplies, ask guests to bring a snack or appetizer.
Step4
Pick a site for the party but be ready for a mess. Stuffing a scarecrow is especially messy. If you don’t have a suitable outdoor location, tell everyone that the scarecrows will be assembled almost to completion at the party and then can be stuffed at home.
Step5
Decide what materials are needed. Old, colorful and mismatched clothes are the best choice for the scarecrow’s body. Fashion a head from burlap, an old pillow case, a real pumpkin or leave the head off entirely. Decorate faces with felt, buttons, seeds or left over craft scraps.
Step6
Document the scarecrow making process from beginning to end with pictures and videos. Ask each guest to pose with his or her scarecrow and line all the scarecrows up for a “scarecrow only” shot.
Step7
Have a scarecrow contest at the end of the party to celebrate the differences in your creations. Give out prizes for the prettiest, the ugliest, the most original, the scariest or the silliest scarecrow.
