How to Survive Military Boot Camp
Military boot camp--or basic training, for some services--is your introduction to military life. In addition to training new recruits to do push-ups and polish boots, it is designed to simulate wartime conditions typical for that branch of the service, to test reactions and abilities. Sometimes it can get a little stressful. Knowing what to expect can help you cope. Read on to learn how to survive military boot camp.

1
Prepare as much as possible, especially physically. You will need to run a lot, so practice before you get to boot camp. If you can, study the Uniform Code of Military Justice and other military information. Be sure to get plenty of rest before you arrive to boot camp.
-
2
Get to know the other recruits. You are going to be living, working, sleeping and, in fact, doing everything alongside these guys, so you might as well be friendly. You will find yourselves helping each other out with tasks and skills-and giving emotional support as well.
-
-
3
Keep in touch with people back home. Write to or call your friends and relatives as often as possible. It will help ease the homesickness you will likely feel.
-
4
Follow the rules, even when you don't understand them. Similarly, follow orders, even when you don't agree with them.
-
5
Remember that your drill instructor is not the enemy. She is there to make sure you succeed--that is, complete your basic training course and learn what you'll need to know during your military career.
-
6
Attend church services. This will be the only time you get to really relax for days on end. Plus, it will often get you out of extra duties such as waxing the floor, and your life is stressful enough already.
-
7
Keep a sense of humor. If you can't laugh about your situation, you might just end up crying about it.

Tips & Warnings
Remember that boot camp doesn't last forever. Think about how good you'll feel when it's over.
Wear comfortable running shoes when you report to boot camp. You will do a lot of running that first day or so, no matter what shoes you are wearing.
Some days, you will want to just give up. But you asked for this experience, so you would probably regret quitting. Keep your eye on the goal, whatever it is at the moment, and you will be better able to handle the current stress.
