A Pilates Mat workout might be just what you need for your fitness program. Pilates is designed to address complete physical fitness by combining the benefits of yoga, dance and even some martial arts into a flowing routine.

  1. Step 1

    Understand that the focus of Pilates is on the core or "powerhouse." This is the torso including the back, belly, chest, shoulders and butt.

  2. Step 2

    Begin with Beginner Matwork if you are just starting out. These seven moves will give you the opportunity to perfect breathing and focus. It is also an opportunity to build the core strength to progress to the more advanced exercises.

  3. Step 3

    Start with Beginner Matwork if you are a fit person, to learn the basics. Add more advanced moves on a weekly basis.

  4. Step 4

    Attend classes to learn the techniques. Once you are familiar with Pilates method, then you can start using a DVD or books to help you with your practice.

  5. Step 5

    Exercise regularly. Any fitness regime needs to be done on a regular basis or it doesn't work! To start, try to do at least 20 minutes a day, three days a week. Add more days if you can. Once you are at five days a week, increase the intensity of your workout by making it longer or learning new exercises

  6. Step 6

    Go for a brisk walk on your off days to get the best results. This will give your new muscles an opportunity to burn calories.
