How to Pick Music for a Sorority Party

If there is one thing a sorority party cannot go without, it's dancing. But without the right music, you could be facing an empty dance floor and a room full of party-goers wondering who was in charge of picking out the tunes. Follow these instructions to make even the pickiest sorority girl happy at your next bash.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Know the theme. Almost every sorority party comes with a theme, which makes your job that much easier. Beach themes are probably the most popular, but sororities can get pretty creative these days! If you are able to find music that goes along with the theme, great! If not, don't sweat it. Go with whatever is popular.

  2. Step 2

Delegate, delegate, delegate! Pass out a sign-up sheet at your chapter meeting about two weeks prior to the party. During the meeting, let your sisters write down any song requests. After the meeting leave the sheet in a common area or post it to your bedroom door if you live in the house. This way, everyone has the opportunity to request their own favorites and the pressure isn't on just you.

  3. Step 3

Consult with a DJ--if your party requires a DJ, you will have an opportunity to make special genre requests, such as "Top 100" or "'80s Rock" in your contract. Oftentimes you can even submit a list of "Do Not Play" songs. You can either hand over full control to your DJ, trusting that he will gauge his choices based on the energy of your guests or you can request he stick to your Do- and Don't-Play lists.

  4. Step 4

Burn, baby, burn. If your party will not be requiring a DJ, it is smart to burn your music onto CDs rather than keeping all the original albums out for anyone to grab. This will also make it easier to hit "play" and forget about it instead of constantly switching CDs throughout the night.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you seem to have hit a slump with sisterly-interaction and your song-request sheet is looking bare, consider printing off Billboard's Top 100 Chart from Billboard.com and attaching it to the sheet for quick reference.
  • Try not to get carried away with theme music. A good mix is much better received than a themed overkill.
