How to Know When a Muffler Is Broken

Mufflers are part of a car's exhaust system. A muffler reduces noise but also prevents exhaust from entering the passenger compartment of a car. 3. Inspect your muffler for holes or rust. Mufflers rust from the inside out; visible rust indicates holes are developing in your muffler.
4. Look for unusual exhaust smoke. Billowing smoke may indicate a broken muffler.
5. Watch water leaks occurring under the rear of the car. Leaks may indicate a hole in the muffler or loose pipes.
6. Consider a broken muffler as the culprit when your car slowly overheats. Problems in a car’s exhaust system can affect engine performance.

• Tap your muffler lightly with a hammer. If you hear debris rattling about, your muffler may need replacing.
• Water found under the rear of the car is most likely condensation from the air conditioning unit. If the water is rusty, or the air conditioning has not been in use, check the muffler and pipes for holes.
