Step 1
Ask the teacher. If your child has a regular jazz teacher, ask her if they know of any summer programs or jazz dance camps that your child could attend. Who knows they may even teach one themselves!
-
Step 2
Contact dance companies. Most major cities have dance companies. In fact, Chicago is known for some of the best. A lot of dance companies, jazz, ballet or otherwise are cast out of there each year. Contact your city's dance companies to see if they offer classes. Not only will they be fun, but you'll be learning from the pros.
-
Step 3
Surf the web. The internet has tons of information these days. Plug in jazz dance summer camp into your favorite search engine and scan through the results. See if something in your area catches your eye.
-
Step 4
Contact the instructor. After you've found a few potential candidates, contact the instructor or administration staff for the jazz summer camp. Inquire further about specifics such as length of the camp, cost, whether it's it an "overnight" camp or if an audition is necessary.
-
Step 5
Audit the camp. Many camps offer seminars before the summer. These are usually held in the spring and provide a day where you or your children can meet the instructors, other potential participants, and they may even run a couple of classes so you can get a feel for their teaching style. This is a great thing to take advantage of as it provides a peace of mind before you plop down a bunch of money to have you or your child attend.
-
Step 6
Make your choice. Now that you've done the research, it's time to make a choice. Review the cost, location, style and level of commitment that the camp entails to find the perfect jazz summer camp for you. There's really no wrong choice since you or your child are going to spend a piece of the summer doing what you love.
