How to Learn Jazz Dance

Do you love the dancing of the Jazz Age, such as the Charleston or tap, the musical theater style of Broadway productions or modern jazz, which includes ballet and more emphasis on technique? If you want to begin jazz dance, you will learn to express yourself through this art form and feel great while you're at it.

Things You’ll Need:

• Workout clothes
• Ballet or jazz shoes
• Jazz music

1. Pin down what style of jazz dance you want to learn.
2. Check out local dance schools for jazz offerings. If the studio does not offer adult classes, ask about private lessons, join a class of younger dancers, or lobby for a new adult class with some friends who want to dance too.
3. Ask the dance studio director if you can observe a class before you commit. That way, you can decide if the school is right for you.
4. Look to your local college for jazz courses. This may have several advantages, including daytime class hours, the possibility of college credit and older, more serious students. A professional dance company may also offer courses or seminars to the public.
5. Order a video that gives a step-by-step explanation of jazz dance moves if you don't want to commit to a weekly lesson. Or, rent a classic movie that demonstrates the type of jazz you want to learn. Then stop, rewind, learn and dance away in the privacy of your own home.

Tips & Warnings

• If you are new to dancing, you may get sore muscles. Be sure to warm up and cool down wherever you decide to dance.
• If you're learning from home, be sure that you clear away obstacles so you have enough room to dance. (You wouldn't want your jazz career to end before it begins.)
• If you are uncomfortable, it will come through in your dancing. Loosen up, have fun and express yourself.
