Let's be honest. Early on, if you're told to play right field, your coach doesn't have a lot of confidence in your ability. At higher levels of play, this is hardly the case. Some of baseball's greatest players were right fielders, like Roberto Clemente. So if you're a beginning player, and you're told to play right field, hold your head up and take pride. With work, you may someday be another Roberto Clemente.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Play catch until you can catch and throw a baseball with great skill.

  2. Step 2

Learn to catch fly balls. Develop your skills by practicing whenever you can. Practice can be in the form of games like “500” while using a rubber ball. Learn to predict the flight of a ball by the sound it makes as it comes off a bat and by its initial flight.

  3. Step 3

Work on your hitting ability. Use methods to improve your hand eye coordination such as playing wiffle ball, going to the batting cage or engaging in soft pitch sessions.

  4. Step 4

Work on other offensive skills such as bunting, hitting behind a runner, and base stealing.

  5. Step 5

Try to play “long toss” three times per week to develop arm strength.

  6. Step 6

Develop a year around training program that centers on basic skills and hand eye coordination. These two areas are greatly enhanced by ongoing repetition. By committing to such a program there will be no "lag" when baseball season begins.
