Although some would say that spelling bees never went out of style, they seem to have made a comeback in the media and in schools. You can find spelling bees popping up all over the United States, and they aren’t just for grade school students. It’s easy to find a spelling bee online or in your area, and test your knowledge of vocabulary.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Newspaper
  • Internet access

Step1
Look through the local newspaper. The “Local” or “Special Interest” section of the newspaper will often have information on upcoming events like spelling bees.
Step2
Call the school district office in your city or the State Board of Education in your state capital. Schools have yearly spelling bees that are the first stop to state, and then national, finals. This is a good way to see spelling bees from the bottom up.
Step3
Search the Internet. Many spelling bees can be found with a simple search of the Internet. You can also look up information on the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee, which is the nation’s largest spelling bee. There are also a multitude of online spelling bees in which you can participate.
Step4
Check your television listings. A lot of larger spelling bees are now being broadcast on television and will have information about upcoming events as well.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many Web sites offer spelling bee practice online. Use these sites to prepare for a spelling bee or just to enhance your vocabulary.
  • Some spelling bees, including the Scripps bee, have an age limit. Check spelling bee rules before preparing to enter.
