How to Build Your Own Golf Course

The owner of one of America’s most beautiful golf courses was once asked how many members the golf club had. “Two,” he replied. “My wife and myself.” Learn what it requires to be able to make such a claim. Building your own golf course is no easy task.

1. Secure at least 150 acres of land suitable for a golf course. The land should be zoned appropriately, have access to a water supply, and ideally be interesting in terms of a layout of holes and vistas.
2. Hire a golf course architect or design the course yourself. The big name architects may charge quite a bit to design a “signature” golf course.
3. Complete the basic ground work that consists of earth moving, clearing of trees for fairways, leveling of fairways and basic configuration of greens.
   
4. Install a modern irrigation system. Finish establishing effective drainage of fairways, and top dress the fairways with top soil.
   
5. Complete the contouring of greens and ensuring that they drain properly. You must bring greens up to The United States Golf Association (USGA) standards. Build sand based tee boxes.
   
6. Add paths for golf carts. If there are any bodies of water, ditches, or ravines to be crossed, you must take those into account.
   
7. Build a maintenance shed for equipment. Be sure to add practice facilities that will include putting greens, chipping greens and a driving range.
   
   
8. Finish with a beautiful club house.
