In addition to a vibrant urban core, Chicago is home to miles of uninterrupted lakeshore terrain that offers a peaceful respite from the bustling city center. Depending on your preference and energy level, there is plenty to do for people of all ages.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Strap on a pair of in-line skates (if athleticism is your forte) and take off along the paved waterfront trail that runs the length of the city. Enjoy spectacular waterfront views as you make your way past beaches, grassy picnic areas and softball diamonds. Bike rentals are also available at North Avenue Beach and Navy Pier.
Step2
Stroll through the Museum Campus, located on the lakefront just south of downtown. In addition to the breathtaking views, you can experience some unique museum adventures. Take your pick from the mummies or dinosaurs at the Field Museum, sea creatures at the Shedd Aquarium and a trip through the solar system at Adler Planetarium.
Step3
Experience the sights and sounds of Navy Pier. Let loose at the many outdoor restaurants housed on the perimeter of the pier or take a ride on the historic Ferris wheel. You can also hit up some funky souvenir stands or book a trip on one of the four Seadog boats that reach speeds of up to 25 knots as they cruise Lake Michigan.
Step4
Unwind in the sun at one of the many beaches that dot Chicago’s shoreline. North Avenue Beach is one of the busiest and it is also a popular spot for sand volleyball leagues. Refreshments can be found at the clubhouse, which also has bathrooms, bike rentals and a lifeguard station.
Step5
Sharpen your mind with a visit to one of the nation’s most renowned universities. Head south on Lake Shore Drive and veer west from Jackson Park Beach to the University of Chicago campus. Spend a relaxing afternoon walking through the airy quads and observing the gothic architecture of surrounding buildings. There is even a botanical garden that is open to the public.
Step6
Toss the guidebooks aside and improvise a lakefront excursion by using one of the many public transportation options. Maps are available at subway stations and you can contact a local trip planning hotline at (312) 836-7000 for additional assistance.

Tips & Warnings

  • Carry exact change if you plan on taking busses or trains.
  • Look both ways when crossing into a bike path. The paved lanes become especially crowded on weekends and traffic on them can be unpredictable.
