Everyone loves that sun-kissed glow, but it getting it the old fashioned way just comes with too many risks. That doesn’t mean you have to go all summer without a tan though. You can have that sexy, summer look all year long without even stepping outside thanks to sunless tanning lotions. Applying them is easy. It just takes a little preparation and few quick tricks.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Exfoliate your skin in the shower with a soft washcloth and cleansing shower gel. Exfoliation removes the dry cells from your skin so you have a smooth, soft surface to work with.

  2. Step 2

Dry off completely and put on a bathing suit or comfortable, tight undergarments. You’ll want to be able to get all areas of your skin that are visible in your suit without transferring the lotion on to your clothes. Of course, you can also apply the lotion without clothing to eliminate tan lines completely.

  3. Step 3

Apply the sunless tanning lotion beginning with your legs and working your way up the rest of your body. You should apply the tanning lotion a bit thicker than you would an ordinary lotion. Spread the lotion in a circular motion on your skin until it is absorbed to avoid streaking. Use it sparingly on your feet, ankles and knees.

  4. Step 4

Wash your hands immediately after you finish applying the self-tanner. Make sure to get under your fingernails and in between your fingers.

  5. Step 5

Let the lotion dry for at least fifteen minutes and then put on loose clothing until it dries completely, usually an hour or so. You need the lotion to dry thoroughly so you get an even tan.

  6. Step 6

Reapply the sunless tanning lotion as needed to achieve your desired color.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can also use plastic gloves to apply the sunless tanner and ensure you never have transfer on your hands.
  • Though sunless tanning lotions typically take one to two hours to develop, many now include bronzers for an instant, sun-kissed look.
  • Most sunless tanning lotions can be used on all parts of your body, but many manufacturers have lines specifically designed for your face as well.
  • Refrain from shaving your legs for a few hours before you apply the self-tanner to prevent irritation to sensitive skin.
  • For a natural look, avoid areas that are not typically tanned by the sun such as armpits and the back of arms.
