Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Phone book
- Contacts information or phone numbers
Step1
Search the yellow pages under “farrier” or “blacksmith.” Many farriers do not advertise in the phonebook but may in larger cities.
Step2
Ask other horse owners for recommendations and referrals. A farrier with experience and referrals will be more likely to do a better job.
Step3
Look at the local veterinarian's office, feed stores and tack stores for bulletins and business cards from farriers in the area.
Step4
Call a few different farriers to ask about pricing, what kind of shoeing and trimming they do and if they are willing to travel to your location.
Step5
Hire a farrier to come to your barn and shoe or trim your horse. Watch his work closely and let him know if you are not happy with any part of the job.
Step6
If the farrier does a good job and you like the work, ask him to follow up in 6 to 8 weeks.
