How to Level Skinning in World of Warcraft

Skinning in World of Warcraft is a profession that lets you skin beasts for their leather or hides. Leather is essential to the leatherworking profession and important to a few other professions. Leveling skinning is straightforward and simple to do. Skinning is a profession that you can level without really ever having to think about it.

Instructions

    • 1

Train to be a skinner and buy a skinning knife. You will need to have the skinning knife in your inventory in order to skin, but you do not have to have it equipped.

    • 2

Skin every beast you kill. You cannot skin most humanoid enemies, but you can skin most all beasts and a few other types of enemies. If you are able to skin it, after the body is looted there will be a different icon when you mouse over it.

    • 3

Check how much experience you are getting for skinning by looking at the color of the word "skinnable" in the information of the dead enemy. If it is orange or yellow it will yield good experience. If it is gray, you can still skin it for the leather but it will not give you any experience.

    • 4

Find animals that others have killed and skin them. You can skin beasts that other people kill as long as the other people looted the corpse and did not skin it themselves. Sometimes you can follow people who are questing and just skin the animals they kill along the way.

    • 5

Take time to skin. Skinning is really easy to level because you can skin so many enemies that you kill while questing. Don't neglect skinning, though, or you may find yourself having to go to lower level areas in order to get your skinning level up to where you can skin animals that are around your character level.

    • 6

Visit Hellfire Peninsula to train to be a master skinner whenever your skinning level reaches 300. Alliance characters should go to the inn at Honor Hold and Horde players should go to the inn at Thrallmar.

Tips & Warnings

  • Skinning is useful for leatherworking, but is also a good gathering skill to take on with another gathering skill (like mining or herbalism) in order to make gold.

  • Sell your leather on the auction house. Leatherworkers will need the leather as well as some other professions for their creations. Selling it to vendors will not make you much money.

  • If you are killing enemies to increase your character level, choose beasts or other skinnable enemies so that you can level your skinning and receive leather to use or sell.
