How to Play City of Heroes

City of Heroes is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that allows you to enter the world of super heroes. Your super hero character will battle evil in Paragon City while developing more and stronger powers. You can even join a team of heroes or a super group to tackle more difficult tasks or for extra experience.

The Installation Process

1. Download City of Heroes from the official Web site. City of Heroes may also be purchased at retail stores and can be installed using the compact discs provided.

2. Install City of Heroes on your computer. You will be prompted to enter a CD-key to verify you own a legitimate copy of the game. This CD-key can be found on the CD case if purchased from a retail store or on your email receipt if purchased online. You will also be required to create a user name and password for the game.

3. Create a PlayNC account. Your PlayNC account will keep all of your account information for City of Heroes. You will need to supply your personal information including contact and payment information.

4. Start the City of Heroes game by clicking on the desktop icon. Agree to the terms of service and allow any new updates to install.

Choosing a City of Heroes Server

1. Log in to City of Heroes using your user name and password.

2. Review the list of servers. Pay special attention to the server load listed next to each server name. A large server load indicates that there are many players currently online. If your computer or Internet connection is slow, a server with a large load will not run properly.

3. Select a server to begin playing City of Heroes. You are allowed to create multiple characters on each server. However, characters will not transfer between servers.

Creating your First Character

1. Choose an origin for your super hero character. The origin defines how your super hero developed his powers. Origin choices are mutant, science, technology, magic and natural.

2. Select your archetype. The archetype will determine your power sets. Archetype choices are blaster, controller, defender, scrapper and tanker.

3. Decide on your primary and secondary power sets. Here you will be able to review all of the powers available to your chosen archetype.

4. Set your character's physical parameters. Use the City of Heroes character design tools to choose your super hero's gender, height and weight.

5. Design your super hero's appearance. The character creation tools give you full control over your character's appearance. Adjust the hairstyle and color, facial features and outfit style and color. The possibilities are endless. Your hero can be dressed as a civilian, in tights, as a medieval knight or even as a samurai.

6. Name your super hero. You may need to be creative here if your first choice is already in use.

Entering Paragon City

1. Play through the tutorial. The tutorial zone, "Outbreak", will provide you with information you will need to proceed through City of Heroes. You will also be able to pick up some beginning inspirations and enhancements. Completing the tutorial provides an easy way to gain a new level.

2. Choose your beginning zone. You may choose to enter Paragon City by way of Atlas Park or Galaxy City. Atlas Park will typically have more players.

3. Speak with a trainer to level up and receive a new power. The trainer will also provide good advice on completing missions and teaming.

4. Visit your first contact to receive your first mission.

Tips & Warnings

• Adjust your keyboard commands using the "Controls" tab found under "Option" in the menu.

• Learn typical chat phrases used in City of Heroes. Ask for clarification from other players or visit the City of Heroes forums for a list.

• Invite other players to join a team by right-clicking on them and choosing the "Invite to team" option. You may want to ask in the chat window first.
