Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hair coloring kit
  • Scissors
  • Gloves
  • Comb or brush
  • Towel
  • Wash cloth
  1. Step 1

Carefully read the instructions for the home hair coloring product you’ve selected. Some dyes can burn and you must be aware of any precautions you should take before starting.

  2. Step 2

Acquire and set out all necessary items to be used during the hair coloring process. Your instructions included with your hair coloring may make note of some specific items. Additionally, you’ll want to have scissors, gloves, a comb, a towel and a wash cloth nearby.

  3. Step 3

Cut your hair. If you’re planning on not only a new color, but also a new hairstyle, you’ll want to cut your hair before applying color. Trimming and final cutting for the style can come after the hair is colored. This way, you won’t be wasting time coloring a long length of hair if you’re just going to cut it.

  4. Step 4

Brush and comb your hair. You need to make sure your hair is tangle-free. If your hair is tangled, the color may apply unevenly.

  5. Step 5

Style your hair as you normally do. For example, if you have a side part, part your hair at the side. If you usually part your hair down the center, part your hair down the center.

  6. Step 6

Wrap a towel around your shoulders. This will keep the hair dye from getting on your clothing and staining them.

  7. Step 7

    Commence with the coloring!

Tips & Warnings
  • Follow the instructions! Veering from the included directions can cause your hair to absorb the dye differently than intended by the manufacturer.
  • Don’t wash your hair right before you color it. It’s advisable to wait 12 to 24 hours after shampooing to apply color.
  • Keep it out of your eyes and off your skin! The chemicals contained in the dye can be harmful.
