How to Register for the GRE

If graduate school is the next step in your education or career, than you must take the GRE. In the United States and Canada the exam is only offered as a computer-based test. In countries where this technology is not available, the test is administered on paper.

Instructions

1. Visit the Educational Testing Service Web site ets.org to register online. Register for either the general test or a subject test. Another option is to register by phone by calling 1-800-GRE-CALL (1-800-473-2255).

2. Choose a payment method. If paying for the computer-based test by credit card, register online at ets.org or by phone. Pay with a certified check or money order by downloading an authorization voucher request form from the ETS website.

3. Mail the appropriate forms and payment to ETS. After it is processed you will receive a voucher number that you will use to register by phone.

4. Register for the paper-based GRE online or by mail depending on your country of residence. Visit the ETS website and follow instructions for paper-based testing.

Tips & Warnings

• Register early to get the testing date you want and to ensure scores make it to your prospective schools in plenty of time to meet their application deadlines.

• Your name on the registration form must match your name on the identification you bring with you on test day. ETS rejects test takers, if the spelling does not match.
