One of the least favorite chores around the house is cleaning grout. Grout seems to act like a magnet for grunge, especially in the bathroom. Luckily, the most stubborn stains and mold will surrender to a little bleach and elbow grease.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Mix 1 cup bleach with a gallon of water.
Step2
Put on some rubber gloves and make sure the area is well ventilated.
Step3
Scrub the grout with a scouring sponge or scrub brush soaked with the bleach solution. Really dig in to get the dirt and mold out.
Step4
Let the bleach solution sit on the grout for 15 minutes.
Step5
Rinse the grout with clean water and let it dry.
Step6
Think about sealing the grout now that it's clean. Two coats of grout sealer applied with a small paintbrush will help keep it clean.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can repeat the scrubbing process. Let the bleach solution sit 15 minutes, and then scrub the grout again with more bleach. Then let it sit 15 more minutes and rinse it.
  • Use an old toothbrush for particularly stubborn stains. A paste can be made from one part bleach to one part baking soda.
  • Sandpaper can be used to remove stains which won't come off any other way. Carefully sand the grout, making sure you don't scratch the tile.
